Actually, it's not about offending people, it's about not using language that dehumanizes based on inherent characteristics. I used to work with retards, but I just called them people. Or clients, or kids, or even "those f'ing kids who won't shut up," or whatever. Some of my favorite people in this world are retards. I have been made fun of ALL OF MY LIFE because I wear glasses and I'm fat. But I don't get all crazy about it. After a while, you get desensitized to it, grow a pair, and move on with your life. Just shrug it off. It's an uphill battle that in the end is not worth the fight.
