War on Chanukah
Had a somewhat depressing weekend. Wanted to buy Chanukah decorations so that I can finally decorate and found NOTHING. It's not like I live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. I live on LI. Jewish people are all over the place. What the fuck, dollar stores?! And Seasons had a sad section for Chanukah. Will have to try again this weekend. Maybe hit Cedarhurst Paper or Party City.
At least I have my Menorah. Will have to raid the parents for their never ending supply of dreidles.
Meanwhile, housemates and I decorated for Christmas. It was my first time ever going out to buy a tree (let alone decorate one). It was... an experience. Picking the tree took about 30 seconds. I've always heard stories of it taking hours and driving to different lots to find the "perfect tree" We lucked out. After going to Family Dollar, the Christmas Store in PJ, and Dollar Tree, we decorated the tree. I was kinda hoping that Christmas music would be playing while we were decorating, but there was no music. ::pout::
While out looking for decorations, I was trying to find clear ornaments so that I could make Chanukah ornaments for myself, but the closest I got to clear ornaments was ALREADY DECORATED clear ornaments. How helpful. -_-
::sigh:: If one more person tells me there's a War on Christmas, I'm going to rub their noses in it!

I think the "war on Christmas" idea is nonsense, but I do think you could say there's a war on celebrating one's particular holiday of choice. Being lumped into the generic greeting of happy holidays is something I do not find particularly satisfying. How many people actually celebrate more than one holiday? Well, I mean, I do, but I'd rather say Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah than cower away from acknowledging either one. If someone's celebrating something in particular, I'd like to know what it is, and I'd like them to be ok with me announcing what I celebrate! Tolerance has no foundation in ignorance.
*steps off soapbox* All that being said, I am grateful to live in a part of the world (and a time in the world) where I can celebrate whatever I want without fear of abuse or death. Really.

I hope you find some decorations! It stinks for there to be so few options out there.

My mom told me I could borrow some of hers. They aren't using all of them this year. Still want to have some of my own though.

One of these years I'm going to get myself a proper Festivus pole...

I don't object to other people celebrating their own holidays and wish you great joy in your celebration of yours.
I've been seeing other posts about keeping christ in christmas and I think some of the problem, is that people have been getting beaten up about it being insulting to refer to a holiday, that one doesn't believe in.
My High School, used to do a Christmas holiday concert. well, my high school is in the first town in Suffolk county (Huntington), so it's right in the middle of the path of the spread of Judeaism from NYC (I believe that historically, people headed out to Long Island from NYC to get away from "Those People" whomever they may be). The school district got told that it was offensive to call it a "Christmas" holiday, so they had to change it to just "Winter" holiday. I think I'm remembering correctly that my high school choral teacher said that they can't call it a christmas concert any more, & that he has to try finding secular music (the hard part being because the catholic church spent so much money buying the songs from the master composers, all these many generations ago (they're even doing "Silent Monk" versions of the Halleluia Chorus, from Handel's Messiah))
Now my old school has been having as designated holidays, Rosh'Hashanah & Yom Kippur for as long as I can remember. Personally, I object to having a Jewish holiday, if I can't have Christmas & Easter holidays.
